The law of design of present time sais that wood and stone is always good. But plastic is also not as simple as it seems. He went through the complicated way to win our acknowledgement.
In 60s everybody was in love with it. Everything was made of colorful, slippery, flexible plastic at that time – from cloak to sofa including home appliances and decorations. The polymers recommended themselves wonderfully demonstrated their two main qualities: series and democratic. People got the affordability to not just table or chair but to interesting designer things.
Only two decades passed and plastic was accused in all cardinal sins. Supposedly it looks too cheap and becomes old very unbeautiful (in contrast to wood, for example) and it does not have the airing and spoils the planet with its waste. The accusation was serious and plastic lost much in its popularity but only for some time – we already got used to it very much.
What happens now? The scientists decided to improve polymers and they became more safe – now they can “breathe”, emit minimum of carcinogen while burning and fit for recycling.
Unexpectedly plastic things got their own aesthetic value. Refusing from “cheap look” the designers found two ways: they began to imitate the expensive sorts of wood, marble and granite using synthetic materials and proved that plastic can be very beautiful itself – very bright, textured, silk, transparent, with the attractive surface…
The great role in rehabilitation of plastic Philipp Stark played: he launched the collection of chairs and armchairs made of transparent polycarbonate created by the motives of ancient models of XVIII and XIX centuries – the fans of classic recognize the beloved outline and the lovers of modernity enjoy the new content.
The plastic family already includes numerous sorts. One of the newest and most interesting – intriguing techno gel – soft, warm, keeping the imprint of your body for some time – is used for creating sittings for chaise lounges and armchairs. Super firm Kevlar net is used for producing screens. Polycarbonate became indispensible in making outdoor furniture. Plexiglas added aesthetical beauty to the firm table tops and wall panels. This list can be continued endlessly.
We cannot imagine our life without perfect qualities of polymers now that guarantees them long life and further development in future.
